HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 27, 2024) – While the early voting period ended on Sunday, the Presidential Preference Primary is still ahead in Michigan for Tuesday.
Voters will be asked to select either a Democratic Party or Republican Party partisan ballot, with President Biden and former President Trump the front-runners in their efforts at this point. Two challengers on the Democratic ballot have suspended their campaigns, along with five on the Republican side. Despite losing in her home state of South Carolina on Saturday, Nikki Haley is still expected to remain in GOP Michigan Primary race, with a rally slated to Monday in Grand Rapids.
The Democratic primary will determine delegates to the national convention this summer, while the Republican primary is seen more as a straw poll, as national party regulations regarding primary dates would penalize the state GOP if they use these results to determine delegates. Michigan Republicans will hold competing state caucuses on Saturday, with the national party-recognized canvas under state party chairman Pete Hoekstra of Holland in Grand Rapids, and another meeting under Kristina Karamo, who is challenging January’s vote ousting her as chairwoman, in Detroit.
Besides the Presidential Preference Primary, other issues along the Lakeshore will be before some voters on Tuesday. Park Township will ask electors to renew and increase to half a mill a four-year local street repair and maintenance levy; Spring Lake Township wants a zoning map amendment ordinance passed; Wright Township wants to renew and increase to just over three quarters of a mill a four-year fire protection levy; Allendale Public Schools has a four-year renewal request of its 18-mill non-homestead property tax levy; the city of Fennville wants to renew and increase to a mill a six-year fire safety levy; Monterey Township wants a five-mill, four-year road improvement levy; Glenn Public Schools has a three-year renewal request of its 20-mill non-homestead property tax levy; and South Haven Public Schools has a six-year renewal of its 19.6-mill non-homestead property tax levy.
Polls will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM on Tuesday.
