GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 5, 2024) – A year behind bars, four years probation, and 100 hours of community service.
That was the sentence handed down by 20th Circuit Court Judge Jon Hulsing on Monday for Anthony Jon Meyer, the 37-year-old Holland man who pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges stemming from the death of a 41-year-old woman at a North Side residence last July.
The length of the jail sentence was part of the agreement Meyer made with the Ottawa County Prosecuting Attorney’s office a month ago when he admitted firing off a “salute cannon” during a July 3rd incident outside of a home in the 160th Avenue-Perry Street vicinity. The homemade explosive sent shrapnel into a crowd, killing Jana Daniels, hospitalizing nine other people, and causing substantial damages to vehicles and buildings nearby.
In documents filed with the 20th Circuit Court, Meyer admitted he had been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana before lighting the explosive. He also admitted to packing the explosive with smokeless powder, which created far greater pressure and led to the release of the shrapnel.
Meyer had been free on $25,000 bond prior to his sentencing.
