Three Hope College student-athletes have been named MIAA Athletes of the Week: junior Gabe Quillan in men’s basketball, sophomore Amanda Lopykinski in women’s tennis and freshman Paul Schneider in men’s tennis.
Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) is being honored for the third time this season and the fourth time in his career.
The 6-9 center averaged 12.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks last week during wins against Albion College and fourth-ranked Calvin University.
A business major, Quillan anchored Hope’s defensive effort that held Calvin All-American center Jalen Overway to a season-low seven points.
Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township) is receiving the award for the second time this season and the third time in her career.
The neuroscience major won all of her matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to help the Flying Dutch win at The College of Wooster, 9-0, on Friday and Ohio Northern University, 8-1, on Saturday.
Lopykinski won her singles matches 7-5, 6-4 against Wooster and 6-3, 6-3 against Ohio Northern.
Lopykinski teamed with doubles partner Sullivan Moran for 8-1 and 8-4 victories against Wooster and Ohio Northern.
Schneider (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) claimed his first MIAA weekly recognition after posting a 3-1 combined singles and doubles record last weekend as the Flying Dutchmen won twice on the tennis court.
During a 5-4 victory at Wooster, Schneider earned a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win at No. 2 singles and paired with Cooper Nugent for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.
During a 6-3 victory at Ohio Northern, Schneider served up a super-tiebreak victory at No. 3 singles.
