SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – It was a scene out of a television or motion picture crime story in the South Haven area last Thursday evening.
According to the office of Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott, a joint narcotics unit of deputies with his department and South Haven Police officers had been investigating a illegal narcotics sales ring taking place around the northwest corner of the county over a three-month-long period. Their investigation centered around a 38-year-old man from Covert who was on parole for a previous cocaine delivery conviction.
After obtaining a parole detainer from the state Department of Corrections, South Haven Police Chief Natalie Thompson attempted to pull the unnamed suspect over on a traffic stop on M-140 south of town, near 16th Avenue. The man did stop his vehicle, but then started fleeing on foot, with Thompson and other officers in pursuit.
The suspect fled into a nearby house that was occupied at the time, and while the residents inside pleaded their innocence in the matter to officers, Thompson and other detectives continued their pursuit through the home, finally tackling the suspect in the front yard.
Following a medical checkup, the suspect was taken to the Van Buren County Jail, where he awaits arraignment on delivery of crack cocaine, resisting and obstructing arrest, and parole violation charges.
