ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 22, 2024) – A renovation project is underway at Dumont Lake, but for whom is still uncertain.
This past week, contractors and subcontractors began work on overhauling the west wing of the Allegan County Services Building in Allegan Township. The $2.6 million-dollar project is aimed at converting the former site of the mental health department into new offices for the county clerk, treasurer and drain commissioner, moving them out of the Allegan County Courthouse off of Chestnut Street in downtown Allegan.
While County Commissioners claim that the move would ease congestion at the courthouse, County Clerk Bob Genetski has joined with Drain Commissioner Denise Medemar and Treasurer Sally Brooks in filing a lawsuit against the County Board, claiming that the state constitution mandates that their offices reside within the county seat.
A mediation hearing on the litigation is slated for February 2nd.
