HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Two high school buildings along the Lakeshore was vacant on Monday due to COVID 19, but one of those two will reopen on Tuesday.
This was the initial announcement from Holland Public Schools on Sunday: “In an abundance of caution, and to allow for additional COVID 19 contact tracing to take place, Holland High, HVRT, and HEC will operate on a remote schedule on Monday 10.12.20 (Monday only). Students, grade 9-12, should NOT report to school. Rather, please log into Google Classroom for directions from your teachers. K-8 will remain open and operate as normal.”
Jason Craner, district communications/marketing manager, said on “WHTC Morning News” on Monday morning that there was one student and eight staff members who tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
On Monday afternoon, the district had this updated announcement: “After switching to remote learning on Monday, October 12, students at Holland High (including Holland Early College and HVRT) will return to face-to-face instruction on Tuesday, October 13…At this point, to our knowledge, there have been NO cases of COVID-19 transmission in any of our buildings. All of our employees and students who have been placed on quarantine following our required guidelines have been able to return back to work and learning.”
Meanwhile, from Saugatuck Public Schools on Sunday: “This is an update to the communication regarding two positive COVID-19 cases reported at Saugatuck High School on Friday, October 9th. Two more positive cases were reported at the high school over the weekend. All four cases are in isolation.
“In consultation with the Allegan County Health Department, Saugatuck Middle School & High School will switch to remote learning from Monday, October 12th through Friday, October 16th to allow the health department to complete contact tracing and to thoroughly clean and disinfect the middle/high school building. Students should login to Schoology for class meeting times and assignments.”
Saugatuck Superintendent Tim Travis added this in a personal memo to students and staff: “While many students considered to be close contacts have been notified and are currently quarantined, the health department is still in the process of identifying close contacts of all four cases. No students or staff at Douglas Elementary School are currently considered close contacts. Douglas Elementary School will continue with in-person instruction this week. I will continue to monitor this situation and will update parents/guardians as more information becomes available.”
Travis is scheduled to comment further on the Saugatuck High situation on Tuesday during a 9:15 AM interview on “WHTC Morning News.”
