ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 5, 2024) – It took only four days for the reality of life in 2024 to be made painfully aware for all in these United States.
Police confirm a sixth grade student is dead after a shooting on Thursday at Perry High School, which is around 40 miles northwest of Des Moines. There are also a handful of gunshot victims who are in the hospital. The 17-year-old shooter, who is a student there, took his own life and also left behind an explosive device that was defused.
This incident is a reminder to law enforcement officials such as Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker that it could happen anywhere at any time.
A “Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events” class, conducted by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, set for next Thursday evening at 7 PM in the main conference room at the Fillmore Street Complex had been filled completely by dusk on Friday, about a day after it was announced. Baker says that, while his office doesn’t hold such sessions, deputies are still involved in such instruction.
