SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 26, 2023) – Although it wasn’t a White Christmas in West Michigan for 2023, there will be another Lakeshore community that will have a wintertime gathering place for when the cold and snow eventually come.
Two weeks ago, officials in South Haven unveiled an outdoor fireplace at Dyckman Park that is modeled after a similar edifice off of East 8th Street near College Avenue in downtown Holland. The Four Seasons at Dyckman project was started by a $25,000 pledge from the civic organization SHOUT. That ignited a fundraising effort which, thanks to gifts from over a hundred donors, and a $40,000 challenge grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, covered the $110,000 price tag for the project.
The eight-foot tall structure is flanked by benches, and pavers similar to those that surround a clock that was also funded by SHOUT are in the walking areas, creating what organizers say is a warm and welcoming landscaped area. The fireplace complements the park’s pavilion that serves as an ice rink in the winter, with the city investing in equipment for that skating surface, as well as major upgrades to nearby public restrooms.
