LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 5, 2023) – A facility for youth sports in Grand Haven could be getting a facelift, thanks in part to some recommended federal funding being directed from Lansing.
On Tuesday, the Governor’s office announced that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will look to steer nearly $294,000 in a Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant to help renovate Sluka Field, off of the corner of Beechtree Street and Waverly Avenue. The site not only has a high school regulation baseball field, but is converted in the fall to a full-sized soccer pitch, and a neighborhood play area was recently updated with new equipment and surfacing.
In all, eight community parks, trails and sports facilities, along with the state’s recently-acquired eight thousand-acre Keweenaw Point property, will share in over $6.4 million dollars in this competitive grant program, with 11 applications seeking a total of $7.4 million sifted by the DNR. Since the money is coming from a federal program, the National Park Service must sign off on the recommendations before any cash comes to these projects.
