ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 19, 2023) – The municipal General Election held nearly two weeks ago is now firmly in the history books along the Lakeshore.
The last loose end from the November 7th ballot was trimmed this past Friday, when the Allegan County board of Canvassers canceled a scheduled recount of a Otsego Township Solid Waste Disposal Millage increase proposal. The hike to a half mill over a five-year period was approved by a one-vote margin, 425 to 424, and as County Clerk Bob Genetski explained, one resident was not happy about that.
According to state law, anyone seeking a recount must be a registered voter in the jurisdiction and have participated in that particular election. There is no automatic recall mechanism for municipal elections in state law.
Another one-vote margin in the November 7th election, this for a seat on the Wayland City Council, was not challenged, according to Genetski.
