HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 26, 2023) – A potentially dangerous situation on Holland’s South Side that developed on Thursday morning had been safely controlled by Thursday evening.
According to Department of Public Safety Captain of Administrative Services Bob Buursma, Fire Services crews were dispatched about 9:30 AM to the Tulip City Truck Stop off of Lincoln Road (M-40) near the I-196 junction on a report of a possible hazardous materials leak. Those responders saw fluid leaking from a truck that was hauling ethanol, and with the help of additional firefighters and the Ottawa County Hazmat Team, isolated the surrounding area and made sure that there was no threat to the public.
An unnamed company specializing in hazardous materials clean up operations was called in, and for about seven hours, they collected the spilled material in portable containment vessels and used absorbent materials to soak up the residue, while offloading the remaining fuel from the stricken vehicle. Quick work in initially addressing the issue kept the ethanol from entering drains or waterways in the area, and shortly after 5 PM, the situation was deemed under control, with the private company completing the clean up efforts.
