CHICAGO (Reuters) – Former National Football League player Sergio Brown has been taken into custody in connection with the death of his mother who was found deceased near her home outside of Chicago last month, CNN reported, citing a law enforcement official.
Authorities apprehended Brown near San Diego after he was deported by Mexico on Tuesday. Police are working to transfer him back to the Chicago area, CNN reported, citing an unnamed official.
Police in Maywood, a community about 10 miles (16 km) west of Chicago, found his mother Myrtle Brown, 73, dead near a creek outside her home on Sept. 16. She had suffered injuries from an assault, local media reported, citing the coroner’s office.
The Maywood Police Department was not immediately available for comment.
Brown, 35, played college football at Notre Dame. In 2010, he signed as undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots. He was also a member of four other clubs during his pro seven-year career.
