HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 10, 2023) – While heavy rain spoiled last Friday’s annual Fire Truck Parade in Holland, the message that the event was meant to convey wasn’t doused.
The theme for this year’s national Fire Prevention Week is “Cooking Safety Starts with You!” According to the US Fire Administration, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and fire injuries, and according to the National Fire Protection Association, departments in the US responded to an estimated average of 170,000 home cooking fires in 2021, the last year such a statistic is available, causing an estimated 135 deaths, three thousand injuries, and over $494 million in property loss.
Holland Fire Marshal Bret Groendyke discussed this during his appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town” last Friday.
Fire Prevention Week runs through Saturday, and an online link to cooking safety tips is here.
