ZEELAND TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 31, 2023) – A 61-year-old Zeeland man ended up in an Ottawa County Jail cell after an eventful Thursday morning along Business 196.
According to Sheriff’s Sergeant Matt Wildfong, the unnamed motorist apparently drove his SUV through a red light on that westbound roadway around 7:30 AM, crashing into a Jeep that was attempting to complete a left hand turn into Main Avenue. As the Jeep rolled over, the SUV just continued to go west, smashing into a minivan at 84th Avenue, before coming to a stop a short distance away. The man then attempted to flee on foot from the wreckage caused, but thanks to Sheriff’s Canine Kyan and his partner Deputy Jeremy Osbun, they tracked the suspect down into the city of Zeeland, and an arrest ensued.
The driver of the jeep, a 46-year-old Coopersville man, was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, while the suspect and the third driver involved, a 26-year-old Zeeland man, were not hurt. The incident remains under investigation.
