SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 14, 2023) – The lengthy squabble over the future of the Denison property at the mouth of the Kalamazoo River isn’t over yet … not by a long shot.
That’s the sentiment of the Saugatuck Dunes Coastal Alliance, who has been fighting for years efforts to develop the land near the remains of the ghost town of Singapore, in the midst of sensitive dune land. The Land Conservancy of West Michigan in 2009 reached a deal with the late oil baron Aubrey McClendon to purchase land south of the river, but the north side was acquired by Northshore of Saugatuck, who wants to build a 50-boat marina as part of its residential development.
During this evening’s biweekly meeting, the Saugatuck City Council will vote on a resolution asking the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy to reject Northshore’s request to build a marina basin. Since the land in question is in Saugatuck Township, the city has no power to directly act on this matter.
The Saguatuck City Council meets at 7 PM in the second floor meeting room at Saugatuck City Hall (102 Butler St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
