HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 2, 2023) – Better to be safe than sorry.
That old maxim was the reason that ultra-marathon swimmer Jim Dreyer on Tuesday halted his planned 82.5 mile-trek across Lake Michigan. He had gone about 10 miles off the shores of Bradford Beach in Milwaukee when the call was made to have him come on board accompanying vessels due to worsening weather conditions. He was looking to complete the journey on Thursday in Grand Haven.
The 60-year-old Grand Haven man was reported in good health as this first attempt to cross the big lake 25 years after his successful swim from Two Rivers to Ludington was halted. Later this month, Brian Huffman will attempt to swim Dreyer’s original route.
Apparently the vessels went across to Holland on Tuesday afternoon after the decision to halt the swim was made, and there has been no word from the Dreyer camp as to if or when he will make a second attempt. Dreyer was swimming to raise funds for the Grand Haven and Western Lake Michigan chapters of the US Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association.
