BLOOMINGDALE, MI (WKZO-AM/FM) – A tense situation at a Bloomingdale home late on Saturday night, July 15, 2023, ended up with one woman and a responding Van Buren County Sheriff’s Sergeant hospitalized.
According to a department statement issued on Sunday morning, a man called 911 around 11:45 PM from a house off of South Chestnut Street near Kalamazoo Street, saying that his 21-year-old daughter, who had just been released from an unnamed hospital, was “combative” and “out of control.” She apparently assaulted individuals inside with a knife and took an unknown quantity of medications.
The man went outside to make his call, and as he did, the woman started setting things on fire inside and locked the doors to prevent anyone from coming in. The residence was in flames when deputies arrived, and after forcing their way in, they rescued the woman, and responding firefighters from various departments brought the blaze under control.
The woman was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. The responding sergeant who suffered smoke inhalation in the incident was also treated at that undisclosed hospital and returned to duty several hours later. There were no other reports of any other injuries in the incident.
No charges were immediately filed in the case, as the matter remains under investigation.
