LANSING MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Governor Whitmer has signed a package of bills that bans child marriage in Michigan.
The new laws now prohibit the marriage of anyone under the age of 18, even with parental permission.
They will also allow parents to apply to annul the marriage of a child who was married.
Previously, those age 16 and 17 needed parental consent to marry and those under the age of 16 needed parental consent and the approval of a judge.
Proposals to end underage marriage have been introduced previously but had not made it out of the legislature.
The new laws are expecting to take effect soon.
