FERRYSBURG, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 8, 2023) – It may not be an “all clear,” but the waters of Lake Michigan off of North Beach Park near Ferrysburg are once again safe to get back into.
So says the Ottawa County Department of Public Health, who lifted a No Body Contact advisory on Saturday evening for that stretch north of Grand Haven. Such a cautionary edict was issued on Thursday after tests conducted the day before showed levels of E.coli that were above maximum safe standards. The lifting of the advisory came after tests done on Friday came back with the water meeting Michigan’s Water Quality Standards by a wide margin (10.81 E.coli per 100 mL; state maximum 300 E.coli per 100 mL) and can be considered safe for the public.
On Friday, the US Army Corps of Engineers’ office in Detroit ordered dredging of the Grand Haven harbor halted out of “an abundance of caution,” as it was believed that, in moving sediment from the harbor bed to the north, it brought with it water that had been contaminated from heavy rains in the area over the past week. Holland-based King Company, who has been a long-time contractor with the Corps for such dredging duties, is expected to resume this task, which had been three quarters done when it was halted, with a mid to late July target date for completion.
