OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 30, 2023) – Michigan’s updated distracted driving law goes into effect on Friday.
Singed by Governor Whitmer earlier this month, the legislation basically bans using a cell phone to do “any task” while behind the wheel. It augments the texting while driving restriction enacted several years ago, and law enforcement officials such as Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker is applauding this extension.
If drivers are caught talking on their mobile device, texting or posting on social media they could be fined. The first penalty for violating this civil infraction is one-hundred-dollars “or” sixteen-hours of community service, with increased punishments for subsequent offenses.
The Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center reported this week that distracted-driving fatalities decreased slightly from 59 in 2021 to 57 in 2022, down 3 percent.
