ZEELAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 24, 2023) – Three persons were hospitalized following a single-vehicle crash on I-196 east of Zeeland on Saturday evening.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Michael Tammenga, deputies and other first responders were dispatched to the westbound lanes of the expressway east of the Byron Road (BL-196) exit. That was where a westbound pickup truck, driven by a 40-year-old woman with four passengers inside, had blown a tire near the 58 mile marker. The motorist lost control of the vehicle, which then veered to the right, went off of the shoulder, and rolled over before coming to rest upside down. No other vehicles were involved.
The driver, along with a 30-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman, all from Holland, were taken to a “local hospital” for treatment of injuries with varying severity. Two other passengers – a 14-year-old child and a one-year-old toddler, were not hurt, and all five were buckled up.
The freeway had to be closed in both directions for a short period of time, and it took several hours before the westbound lanes were reopened. That stretch of highway is in a construction zone, as it is carrying traffic in both directions while the eastbound lanes are being rebuilt.
The crash remains under investigation.
