HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 22, 2023) – For the second time in three months, Kum and Go has been stymied by a local municipality in efforts to create a bigger footprint on the Lakeshore.
The convenience store/fueling station chain, with over 400 outlets in a dozen states, including three outlets already open in Kent County, was looking for Holland City Council approval on Wednesday night of a rezoning request for about two tenths of an acre at the junction of M-40 (Lincoln Avenue) and US-31. The property is owned by the adjacent Willow Home Mobile Park but not used for manufactured housing.
While the Holland Planning Commission recommended passage of the rezoning request, Fifth Ward Councilman Scott Corbin, who represents the area in question on the governing panel, didn’t agree.
Holland Mayor Nathan Bocks countered.
While Council approved the rezoning request, the 4-3 margin was one shy of legally passing the measure, according to City Attorney Vincent Duckworth. Council members Quincy Byrd and Dave Hoekstra were absent.
Kum and Go, which already is planning to have an outlet on East 24th Street near US-31, had a rezoning request for a proposed site off of Quincy Street near US-31 tabled by the Holland Township Planning Commission in April due to concerns over private land currently owned by the Ottawa County Road Commission.
