Bernard (Bernie) Van Kampen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully and went to his heavenly home on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at the age of 87.
Born February 27, 1936, in Park, a small burg on Holland’s Northside to Henry and Louise Van Kampen, Bernie was the oldest of six siblings. He married Faye Volkers on March 21, 1957. The couple celebrated their 65th anniversary before Faye’s passing last December.
After high school, Bernie served our country for two years in Japan following the Korean War. Upon returning to the U.S., Bernie had numerous entrepreneurial ventures including the founding of V&S Siding in 1970. Throughout his life, Bernie’s greatest joy was to be a servant to others. For twenty years, Bernie and Faye volunteered with World Renew to aid families rebuilding after disasters, including Hurricane Katrina among many others.
Bernie was an avid hobbyist and craftsman. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren on Hutchins Lake fishing, woodworking, antique hunting and restoration, carving birds, painting, and restoring Cushman scooters among other activities.
Bernie was predeceased by his wife Faye, parents, his son-in-law, Daniel DeLeeuw, and other cherished family.
Bernie is survived by his children, Joan DeLeeuw, Londa (Mark) Kurburski, and Dan (Dana) Van Kampen; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Evan) Burton, Nicholas (Nicole) Kurburski, Emily Kurburski, Madelyn Kurburski, Dan Martell, Christopher Martell, Sara Van Kampen, Nathan (Krysta) Van Kampen; great-grandchildren, Colman and Alec Burton, Alaina Kurburski, and Liam and Adam Martell; siblings Phyllis Cable, Judy Van Kampen, Rose Den Besten, Henry Van Kampen, and Pat (Mike) Slawinski and in-laws James (Eunice) Volkers, Clyde (Joan) Volkers, Paul (Linda) Volkers, Mary (Joel) Taylor.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Friday, June 23, 2023, at Gibson Christian Reformed Church, A-6486 140th Ave. Holland, 49423, with Reverend Rodney Brandsen officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation is scheduled for 5:00-7:00 pm Thursday, June 22nd, 2023, at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E 16th St., Holland.
