HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, June 8, 2023) – A concentrated effort to save lives on the water along the Lakeshore is underway.
The West Michigan Lakeshore Association of Realtors “Save-A-Life” program has distributed a near-record amount of life jackets to marine law enforcement agencies in Allegan, Ottawa and Muskegon counties. The Allegan County Sheriff’s Marine Division received over 150 of such jackets, while Sergeant Jon Knott, head of Ottawa County Sheriff’s Marine Unit, picked up a similar amount last month.
The program was created three years ago when a record number of 57 drownings were reported in Lake Michigan.
According to the WMLA, drowning is the second leading cause of death in children.
