UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, May 23, 2023) – It’s the 21st Century version of the classic Western villain who looks to cheat the widow woman out of the deed to her home.
According to analytics firm CoreLogic, the risk for property fraud has increased 23 percent, while FundingShield claims that a little over half of all property transactions bore signs of wire and title fraud risk in the fourth quarter of 2022, an all-time high.
Such fears are driving property owners to contact local county register of deeds for alerts on when their titles are at risk, according to Allegan County’s Bob Genetski.
It’s as much for peace of mind as anything else, says Ottawa County Register of Deeds Justin Roebuck.
