ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 16, 2023) – It may not be until the end of 2024 at the earliest before broadband becomes available throughout the Lakeshore.
The Michigan High Speed Internet Office was swamped by 157 applications from entities looking to tap into $238 million in Realizing Opportunity with Broadband Infrastructure Networks grant money. Among those entities was 123Net, who has contracted with both Allegan County and Ottawa County to fill holes in broadband service.
The state grant would mostly complete the funding needed for the start of installation. Allegan’s $30 million presentation was the first all-county proposal to fill the digital divide in the state, but County Board Chairman Jim Storey of Holland admits that the selection process wasn’t first come-first serve.
Allegan County has pledged $17.7 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds which was matched by 123Net, while Ottawa County is seeking a $16 million state grant, and is spending $7.5 million in local funding through the federal American Rescue Plan Act, more than matching 123Net’s $3.5 million.
