LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 2, 2023) – A classic line from the movie “The Wizard of Oz,” uttered by the Wizard Frank Morgan, could be used by minority Republicans in the state Legislature right now.
The GOP, who lost the gavel in both the House and Senate in last November’s elections, have seen Democrats storm through legislation in the first four months of the new session, most notably in gun bills following the February shootings at Michigan State University. Therefore, Republican lawmakers, such as third-term House Representative Luke Meerman of Coopersville, are standing united in not supporting any Democratic-sponsored budget legislation until they get a chance to look over line items within the bills, something that the GOP members claim has been lacking thus far in this session.
State lawmakers go back into business sessions at the Capitol today, with a June 30th deadline for having an approved Fiscal 2024 budget on Governor Whitmer’s desk for consideration.
