ALLEGAN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — After nearly six years of planning and public input, work on the transformation of Downtown Allegan is set to begin.
City officials and other project partners are holding a groundbreaking event on Tuesday, March 20 at 11 a.m., with the work scheduled to be completed by Fall of 2024.
The transformed downtown will include new water and sewer mains, the removal of lead service lines, new roads, landscaping, street lighting, wider sidewalks, traffic reconfiguration, and a new pedestrian plaza next to Minnie’s Restaurant.
Officials say work began in 2018 to develop a plan to completely reconstruct the Downtown Allegan core. They also went onto say that over the past four years, City Councilmembers, Downtown Development Authority board members, Public Spaces Commissioners, and City of Allegan staff have worked to come to a shared vision with public input from Allegan residents, business owners, and stakeholders.
The work is scheduled to be completed through three phases beginning in the Spring of 2023 with construction to last from 12 to 18 months.
