ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 14, 2023) – It seems as if the Fillmore Street Complex in West Olive doesn’t have a monopoly on county government drama along the Lakeshore.
On Monday, three elected Allegan County officials – Treasurer Sally Brooks, Clerk/Register of Deeds Bob Genetski, and Drain Commissioner Denise Medemar – filed a lawsuit in Allegan County Circuit Court asking that plans be halted for moving their offices out of their current location at the county courthouse off of Chestnut Street in Allegan to the County Services Building off of 122nd Avenue in Allegan Township. The litigation claims that state law mandates that these offices remain in the officially designated county seat, and that moving them may “threaten, impair or hamper” the functions of their offices.
Last month, the Allegan County Board approved plans for a $600,000 improvement to the complex off of Dumont Lake that would accommodate such a move of those offices by next year. It’s part of an ongoing process to renovate the Chestnut Street courthouse location, which is somewhat restricted in space in downtown Allegan, and move more county government operations to the 122nd Avenue campus that has more room to grow.
The Allegan County Board has not commented on the lawsuit, and no court date was initially set for any hearings into the matter.
