HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) –Twelve people died on Michigan roads since last week, a total of 704 this year — and 56 more deaths than at this same time last year, according to Michgan
Another 154 more were seriously injured, a statewide total of 3,454 to date, which is 377 fewer serious injuries than at this time last year.
In releasing this week’s number, Michigan State Police also offered some school-bus safety tips. Riding in a school bus, according to MSP officials, is safer than walking, riding a bicycle, or using a private vehicle to get to school.
Police go on to note that the majority of bus-related deaths and injuries involve pedestrians — mostly children struck by a bus or hurt by traffic when they are getting off the bus.
School bus safety tips for drivers:
- Prepare to stop when a slowing bus has its overhead yellow lights flashing
- Stop at least 20 feet away for buses when red lights are flashing, unless driving in the opposite direction on a divided highway
- Slow down in or near school and residential areas
- Look for clues-such as safety patrols, crossing guards, bicycles, and playgrounds-that indicate children might be in the area
- Watch for children between parked cars and other objects
School buses’ lights are like traffic signals:
- Yellow: Prepare to stop
Red: Stop
Flashing hazard lights: Proceed with caution
School bus safety tips for students:
- Always stay in sight of the bus driver
- Don’t hurry off the bus; check traffic first
- Don’t go back to the bus after exiting
