Donald Maatman, age 97, of Holland, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at Grand Village Assisted Living.
Don was born one of the youngest of seven children on October 8, 1925, in Overisel MI. He served in the Navy as a medic during World War 2, and met and married his wife, Rosey, after the War while she was a student at Hope College. They eventually had two children. Don was a carpenter with his dad and together they built many homes in the wider Holland area. Later, he became a salesman and enjoyed a long career as an insurance agent. He was a lifelong member and former Deacon at Third Reformed Church in Holland. He was an avid tennis player, water skier, boater, and sailor. He and Rosey so enjoyed living on Lake Macatawa and sharing their surroundings with their friends. They were a couple invested in their family and animated by the love of Jesus, which was reflected in the many friendships they forged, both locally and overseas. Don had a gentle and generous heart for others. We were all blessed to know him.
Don was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Rosalie “Rosey” (Seith) Maatman; his parents: Harry & Gertrude (Seinen) Maatman; his siblings: Harv (Kit) Maatman, Evelyn (Chuck) Zeiser, Harriet (Herm) VanderLeek, Lillian (Harv) Poll, Clarence (Mildred) Maatman, and Irene (Pres) Rigterink.
He is survived by his children: Stephen (Lynn) Maatman, and Peggy (James) Sonke; grandchildren: Jeremy Maatman, Carissa (Jason) Wieser, Jason Sonke, and Lisa Sonke; great-grandson, Noah Weiser; and many nieces and nephews.
A family graveside service will take place in Pilgrim Home Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, February 26, 2023. Memorial contributions may be given to CorsoCare Hospice or Camp Geneva. www.langelandsterenberg.com.
