For the second consecutive time, four Hope College student-athletes have been selected as Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Athletes of the Week.
This week’s honorees included women’s basketball forward Claire Baguley, women’s diver Abby Koops, women’s track runner Sara Schermerhorn, and women’s swimmer Ashlea Swingewood.
Baguley is the MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the first time. The senior from Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Central HS) helped the Flying Dutch avenge their two losses last week by averaging 18 points on 72.2% field goal shooting against nationally-ranked Trine University and Albion College. The environmental science major scored a team-high 22 points during a 83-69 victory at Trine on Wednesday while shooting 8-of-11 from the field. Baguley added 14 points on a 5-of-7 field goal shooting during a 78-49 victory vs. Albion at DeVos Fieldhouse on Saturday.
Koops is the MIAA Women’s Diving Athlete of the Week for the fourth time this season and the eighth time in her career. The sophomore from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Northern) took first on both boards on Friday to help the 12th-ranked Flying Dutch win at No. 19 Calvin University, 162-81. Hope finished the MIAA dual meet portion of the season with a 5-0 record. A nursing major, Koops posted a season-best, six-dive total of 270.66 points on 1-meter and 269.11 points on 3-meter.
Schermerhorn is the MIAA Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the first time. The freshman from Traverse City, Michigan (T.C. West) clocked the MIAA’s fastest time in the 200 meters this season and set a school record with a run of 25.89 seconds on Friday at Grand Valley State University. Schermerhorn surpassed a 14-year-old Hope record in her third collegiate 200-meter race. Schermerhorn took third in her event at GVSU and also recorded the MIAA’s fifth-fastest, 60-meter run of the season at 8.10.
Swingewood is the MIAA Women’s Swimming Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and in her career. The freshman from Carmel, Indiana (Carmel HS) recorded first-place performances in two events for the Flying Dutch at Calvin. Swingewood won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.35 and the 500 freestyle in 5:13.89.
