JoAnn Lemmen, age 89, of Holland, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 17, 2023.
She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church in Holland.
JoAnn was born in Grand Rapids, MI; graduated from Lee High School and Blodgett School of Nursing. She married Leonard Lemmen in 1954 and moved to Holland, MI. She worked for Dr. Charles Bazuin for 4 years, and Ottawa County Health Department for 34 years both as Communicable Disease Control and AIDS Coordinator from 1981-1999. She then served the Holland Rescue Mission as a nurse for 15 ½ years.
She was sensitive to the needs of others and especially the homeless. She and her late husband, Len, mentored many homeless men through the years. She was given many awards from agencies, organizations, and the state for her work in communicable diseases. Serving others was a calling in her life. She practiced as a nurse until age 85 and cared for the needs of many people for years. Family was very important. She enjoyed all the time spent together with fun, food, birthdays, and holidays.
She is preceded in death by husband, Leonard Lemmen; brother and sister-in-law, Richard J. and Margaret Oosta; brother-in-law, Wilburt Lemmen; nephew, John Oosta; parents, John and Winnifred Oosta; and parents-in-law, Benjamin and Nellie Lemmen.
She is survived by a son, Michael and Karen Lemmen; grandchildren, Grant Lemmen, Kara, and Joel Ebbers; great-grandchildren, Braeden Ebbers, Emma Ebbers; sister-in-law, Doreen, and Gail Harbers; sister-in-law, Mary Decker; cousin, Lois, and Dick Heys; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family is 3:00-5:00 pm Sunday, January 22, 2023, at Langeland Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St. Holland, MI 49423.
Funeral services are at 11:00 am on Monday, January 23, 2023, and also at Langeland Sterenberg Funeral Home.
