Arnold Essenburg, age 83, of Ann Arbor, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2022, surrounded by his wife and children.
Arn was a dedicated member of Ann Arbor Christian Reformed Church. He graduated as Valedictorian from Zeeland High School, following which, he graduated from Calvin College studying Chemistry. Arn went on to earn his master’s degree from the University of Michigan and continued pursuing his passion for chemistry as a medical researcher for many years. One of Arn’s greatest accomplishments was being on the research team that founded the medication, Lipitor. Arn had many hobbies, some of which included gardening, camping, traveling to National Parks, and documenting every aspect of his life. Most of all, Arn loved the Lord and his family and was a great caretaker for his wife for many years.
Arn was preceded in death by his parents, Martin & Delia (Elzinga) Essenburg; his sister, Evelyn Van Ingen; his brother, Jerry Essenburg; his sisters-in-law: Carol Essenburg, Glady Essenburg; and his granddaughter, Meredith Rose Essenburg.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn; his children and grandchildren: Ed & Barb Essenburg (Eric, Anna, Andrew); Merwyn & Wendy Essenburg (Joel, Karen); Alvin & Kimberly Essenburg (Jeremiah, Noah, Josiah, Sarah); his brothers: Robert Essenburg, Milton Essenburg; Donald (Lois) Essenburg, Richard Essenburg, Clifford (Julie) Essenburg; and siblings-in-law: Janice Essenburg, Carl Van Ingen, Ruth Mulder (Bill Coffman), Marv (Karen) Apol, Ron (Jan) Apol.
A funeral service honoring Arn will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at LifeChange Community Church, 3014 Newell St, Dorr, MI 49323. A time of visitation will take place Wednesday, December 14, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State Street, Zeeland. Visitation will also be held at church from 10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. prior to the service on Thursday. (A memorial service to take place in Ann Arbor at a later date is being planned).
