LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 22, 2022) – The Huyser Farm House Committee set its first meeting for 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at the township hall, 4338 Beeline Road.
The Laketown Township Parks and Recreation Commission member Jeremy Van Hoven, chairperson of the committee, reported Wednesday, Nov. 16, that he has
eight people willing to serve on the committee that will look at the future of the house at Huyser Farm Park, 4188 64 th St.
Those on the committee are Brad Laninga, Emily Petkus, Aaron Rund, Cheryl Ward, Chris Wood, Tom Hoekman, David Trudell and Mike O’Connor. Parks
Commissioner Karen Simmons will also serve on the committee.
The 1,559-square-foot, two-story home was built in 1939 by Manuel and Lilah Huyser. Much of the timber used in construction came from the property itself or
was milled nearby.
Lilah, 85, died in 1996. Manuel, 90, died in 1999.
The township acquired the property in 2001 for a park. The house is not occupied.
Several ideas for the house have been informally discussed over the years such as turning it into a residence and renting it out, having firefighters live in it while on duty, making it a classroom or ecology center, or tearing it down. Other structures on the property, including a barn and another house, have already been
demolished.
