This snow and cold brings back some memories…
First, staying over in Holland instead of going home to
Jenison. It reminded me of what I believe was 2005 when I stayed at a hotel on
Holland’s North Side due to a winter storm that brought a tremendous amount of
snow to the Lakeshore in a short period of time. It took over two hours to
drive about a mile and a half because of the heavy snowfall and the lack of
plowing between 120
th
Avenue/Lakewood Blvd. and our studios.
The cold at this time of year is reminiscent of annual
pilgrimages during my time as the radio play-by-play voice of the UHL Saginaw
Lumber Kings. It seemed as if we would have to bus up to Thunder Bay, Ontario
in late January/early February for games against the Senators/Thunder Cats, and
it was just as cold on the northwest shore of Lake Superior then as it is here
now. I’m waiting for the Holland BPW to install electrical outlets at some of
the parking spaces downtown for winter use as the electrical utility in the
former Fort William already has.
The cold also reminded me of 1981, when we shivered in our
family car while traveling in late January on a Sunday afternoon in Detroit,
while five hours away to our south, the Cincinnati Bengals punched their first
ticket to the Super Bowl at an icy Riverfront Stadium by chilling out Dan Fouts
and the visiting San Diego Chargers.
Summer storms are one thing, but it seems as if the winter
storms are the ones that linger longer in our memories.
Thanks!
