Just as I would like to end the Friday Morning News radio
program on a lighter note, I’d like to make this final post for the week a
little lighter than some of the heavy stuff that we discussed earlier this
week.
Dave Lorenz provided such a diversion during our weekly
“Travel
Michigan” segment
today. The VP of Pure Michigan talked about attending the
Detroit Tigers’ Opening Day yesterday and seeing the crowd get into a
promotional video shown on the big scoreboard screen before the game about the
Upper Peninsula.
That discussion brought back memories of going back to the
ancestral roots the past three years, as my father was born and raised in
Houghton. Three years ago in Ontonagon, two years ago at the Soo, and last year
in Rapid River, extended trips to the UP have brought back a ton of memories
and a greater appreciation of what some would like to call the “State of
Superior.”
We’re headed back up there again this July, spending time
again in the Rapid River area and perhaps going back to Houghton if time allows
it. I can say that the family gravesite needs some trimming as an excuse if
Holly and her parents will buy into it.
I still don’t know if I really want to move “up north” if
and/or when I retire – I am not a fan of snow and cold – but the allure of the
UP continues to grow each time I go there.
However, that’s not the only trip that we’re hoping to take
this year. This is the last weekend to sign up for our
“Discover the Best of Eastern
Canada”
eight-day excursion. Between October 15
th
and the 22
nd
,
we’re planning to tour Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, the 1000 Lakes area near
the US border, Toronto and Niagara Falls, and we would love for you to join us.
This trip falls just before our wedding anniversary on the 22
nd
as
well, which makes it even more special.
Yeah, I know that we’re four weeks away from the Tulip Time
Festival, but it’s still nice to have these trips to look forward to.
Thanks!
