Time to see what happens.
As I mentioned earlier in this blog series, it is tough to
put together a posting when I have to sub for Ed Ver Schure in hosting “Talk of
the Town.” Such has been the case over the last couple of months as Ed has
dealt with some health issues.
Today, he told me he was feeling good enough to give it a go
“on his own,” and with me having some scheduled days off next month, it was a
good time to have Ed back behind the mike full-scale on TOT. I’m here as a
safety net if necessary, but some say that work is a good therapy, and we are
hoping that this is the case with Ed. After all, aren’t we all taking things “one
day at a time?”
Therefore, I have a few moments to share some thoughts on
some issues of the day:
-
1) The first round of television debates among the
plethora of Democratic Party presidential candidates is this week. It will be
interesting to see if this will help “cull” the field down to a more manageable
number for the challenging party. Right now, there doesn’t seem to be an
emerging contender to take on the incumbent President Trump, but we’re about 17
months away from the 2020 General Election, so a lot can change in the interim.
However, unless one of the Dems develops into the next coming of Bill Clinton
instead of the next coming of Michael Dukakis, the likelihood of making Donald
Trump a one-term president is, at this point, remote. -
2) Let’s see if the third chance for Holland’s
Economy Inn will be the charm, or will it be the proverbial “third strike” for
the one-time Blue Mill Inn. It seems as if the owners are “trying” to do the
right things in order to stay in the lodging business, including retaining a
management firm that would apparently have full autonomy in operating the
establishment. However, all of the efforts to stay in code and maintain a clean
lodging facility would be for naught if nobody stays at the motel. With the new
downtown hotels springing up, along with the emergence of the short-term rental
industry (i.e., AirBnB), all of the Economy’s efforts may be “too little and too
late,” and it will be the whims of business, rather than the edicts of
inspectors, that could spell doom for the motel off of US-31 and East 16
th
Street. -
3) As debate begins to escalate over Roe v. Wade, as
states either consider or pass legislation meant to overturn that ruling made
more than 45 years after the US Supreme Court legalized abortions, one wonders
why He has allowed this “choice” to remain. Here’s an opinion: Roe v. Wade is a
way to help separate the “sheep” from the “goats.” If one believes in the Bible
as the inerrant, true Word of God, one cannot be for abortion. If one doesn’t
believe in the Bible as the inerrant, true Word of God, one can be for
abortion. It’s not the only such litmus test, and there are those who are
against abortion but don’t take His Word as inerrant, but it’s a way to perhaps
explain why He has allowed this practice to continue in this nation and in
others worldwide.
Thanks!
