SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 26, 2022) – Addressing a priority for 2022 is on the agenda for the Saugatuck City Council tonight.
The panel is expected to approve an over 64 thousand-dollar contract with Kasterberg VerHage to connect the sidewalk from the Dewey property, where the Star of Saugatuck vessel is docked, to Willow Park. This would include removal, salvaging and reinstallation of brick pavers, removing a concrete retaining wall, installing a new concrete sidewalk and steps, grinding the curb head, putting down new turf, and other related work.
A crosswalk request at Lucy and Water streets is included in the project, and a retained consultant recommended the bid from the Grand Rapids-based construction firm, which came within 10 percent of the estimated cost. KV has met M-DOT standards for this type of work, and Fleis and Vandenbrink officials say that the firm’s specialization in public projects with park/landscape components makes it a good fit for this project.
According to City Manager Ryan Heise, the money will come from $150,000 available for public works projects from the city’s general fund.
Council will also formally receive a 15-page abuse of power petition drive claiming that a June decision by Mayor Garnet Lewis to appoint a member of the planning commission and a member of the zoning board was done in violation of a 2020 boards and commissions selection policy approved by the city, and seeks to undo the mayor’s action, along with subsequent decisions made by the two panels.
The Saugatuck City Council meets in the second-floor meeting room of Saugatuck City Hall (102 Butler St.) at 7 PM. An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
