Jeffery Lee Homkes

Jeffery Lee Homkes, age 59, of Overisel, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 14, 2022. With his faith in God and the assurance of Heaven, Jeff accepted his sudden and untreatable cancer diagnosis with incredible strength and dignity. He spent his remaining days surrounded by family and friends. Ever selfless, Jeff helped us all prepare for the great loss we would have to endure. He was a kind and generous man who touched the lives of many. Never married, Jeff became a valued member of his friends’ families and was lovingly known as “Uncle Jeffy.”

Jeff spent his early years on the family farm raising hogs and cattle and participating in 4-H. In 1995, he started work at Dykhuis Farms where he remained for 27 years. It is estimated that during his career, he weaned over 1,500,000 piglets. Jeff loved his job and enjoyed sharing his knowledge and passion for raising animals.

Jeff’s other love was bass fishing. He was an accomplished angler who competed in countless tournaments. Many lasting friendships were created on the water.

Jeff is survived by his parents, Bruce (Jan) Homkes of South Overisel, Judith Bale; siblings, Kurt (Michelle) Homkes, Julie (Greg) Engelsman, Erika Homkes; niece, Olivia Engelsman; nephews, Cody Engelsman, Kurtis (Alyssa) Homkes, Eric Mathews, Jeremy Mathews; and many extended family and friends.

A memorial service, with Rev. Michael Pitsenberger officiating, will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at Overisel Reformed Church. A-4706 142nd Ave., Holland, MI 49423. There will be dinner and a time of gathering immediately following the service until 7:00 pm at The Overisel Emporium, 4675 142nd Ave., Holland, MI 49423. Burial will be in Overisel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zeeland Fishhawx youth bass fishing club, 5983 Sandy Way, Zeeland, MI 49464.
