UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 6, 2022) – Two traditional events on Labor Day went off without a hitch on Monday.
Under cloudy skies, the 17th Holland/Zeeland Community Labor Day Truck Parade was held. More than 70 vehicles of various sizes rolled out from the Herman Miller headquarters campus on Zeeland’s east side and toured the downtown districts of both Zeeland and Holland before parking near the Heeringa Holland Civic Center Place for an ice cream social and other activities. The event honors the goods and services produced by area companies, and the employees who provide those goods and services.
Meanwhile, over 26,000 people strolled the five-mile-long Mackinac Bridge in the 64th annual celebration of the span that connects Michigan’s two peninsulas. Mackinac Bridge Authority Bridge Director Kim Nowack said that it was a perfect day for the walk, with slightly more people than in 2021.
Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist led the walk this year, the first time that the sitting Governor has not participated in the walk in more than 20 years. Governor Gretchen Whitmer instead attended a Labor Day union event in Detroit during this election year.
As for the blocking of I-75 as a result of the walk, traffic was jammed up on both ends of the bridge for about six hours.
