DETROIT, MI (WKZO-AM/FM) – Atlanta edged Detroit 27-23 in the preseason opener at Ford Field. Jared Goff and the Lions first-team offense played the opening series and scored on a 9-yard D’Andre Swift run. Devin Funchess caught a 1-yard TD pass from back QB Tim Boyle in the second, and Detroit added field goals from Austin Seibert and Riley Patterson.
In the battle to be Goff’s backup, Boyle was 9/16 for 111 yards, a touchdown and an interceptions, while David Blough was 18/28 for 141 yards and no scores; it was his fumble prior to the 2-minute warning that led to the game-winning score for the Falcons.
Defensively, former Michigan standout Aidan Hutchnison made an impact in his pro debut with a tackle for loss.
The Lions haven’t won a preseason game since 2018; they will try to end that streak next Saturday at Indianapolis.
