UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) – The MLB Trade Deadline is this afternoon. The Tigers and the Braves made a trade on Monday. Atlanta acquired outfielder Robbie Grossman from the Tigers in exchange for left hand pitcher Kris Anglin. After hitting 23 homers and driving in 67 runs in 2021, Grossman has had a miserable 2022 season at the plate hitting just .205 with two homers and 23 RBI’s.
The Astros are making some moves ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Houston acquired first baseman Trey Mancini in a three-team trade with the Orioles and Rays. The Astros dealt outfielder Jose Siri to Tampa Bay and got back minor league pitcher Jayden Murray. Houston also sent pitcher Chayce McDermott to Baltimore. ESPN reports the Astros are also trading for catcher Christian Vazquez in a deal with the Boston Red Sox.
The Oakland A’s are sending starting pitcher Frankie Montas to the New York Yankees in a six-player trade. The A’s are also including relief pitcher Lou Trivino. New York is giving up four prospects including left-handed pitcher Ken Waldichuk. Pitchers Luis Medina and JP Sears along with infielder Cooper Bowman are heading to the A’s. Team officials say Waldichuk and Sears will start out in Triple-A Las Vegas. Montas has 109 strikeouts in 104 and two-thirds innings pitched so far this season.
The Padres are building up the backend of their bullpen. San Diego has traded for left-handed pitcher Josh Hader from the Milwaukee Brewers. In exchange, the Brewers are receiving pitchers Taylor Rogers, Dinelson Lamet, and Robert Gasser, as well as outfielder Esteury Ruiz. Gasser is the number seven prospect and Ruiz is the 28th best prospect in the Padres’ system according to MLB Pipeline. Hader is a four-time All-Star that currently leads the big leagues with 29 saves.
The St. Louis Cardinals are adding some starting pitching right before the deadline. The team acquired lefty Jose Quintana in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. The Cardinals sent over minor league prospects Johan Oviedo and Malcom Nunez. Relief pitcher Chris Stratton is also coming to St. Louis as part of the trade. The 33-year-old Quintana is three-and-five with a 3.50 ERA and 89 strikes outs in 103 innings this season.
The World Series champion Atlanta Braves are giving one of their All-Stars a massive new contract. The baseball club announced third baseman Austin Riley has signed a ten-year contract, worth 212-million-dollars. Riley finished top 10 in National League Most Valuable Player voting last season, totaling 33 home runs and 107 runs batted in. The 25-year-old followed that up with his first All-Star appearance this season. The deal is the largest in the history of the Braves’ franchise.
