She worked as a hairdresser and for JC Penney for many years, while serving as a homemaker. On June 27, 1944, Gretta married Kars Petersen and together they were the parents of three children.
Gretta was a long-time active member of Faith Christian Reformed Church where she spent a lot of time in the kitchen baking cookies and serving meals. Her favorite Bible verse was Micah 6:8: “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Kars. She is survived by her sons Jan David (JoAnn), Bill (Lesley), daughter Beth (Bob) King, and 8 grandchildren: Chris Petersen (Chrissy), Eric Petersen (Alison), Allison Brown (Chris), Julie Chen (Henry), Steve King (Kelli), Jason King (Laura), Kars Petersen, and Veronica Petersen, and 16 great-grandchildren: Bennett Petersen, Grace and Milo Petersen, Morgan, Carson, and Holden Brown, Acacia and Micah Chen, Levi, Owen, and Maxwell King, and Joel, Anna, Kyle, Toby, and Leah King.
Gretta was also preceded in death by siblings Jeanne and Harvey Poel, Bernard and Ann Wychers, and Jerry and Phyllis/Gene Wychers.
The family thanks the staff of Lakeside Vista and Kindred Hospice for their exceptionally compassionate care. As Gretta was dying, it became obvious that these dedicated caregivers were grieving for a loved one along with the family.
Funeral services will be at 12 noon Thursday, July 21, 2022, at Faith Christian Reformed Church, 85 W. 26th St. Holland. Pastor Jen Rozema officiating. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial gifts may be given to Holland Free Health Clinic instead of flowers.
