BARRY COUNTY, MICH. Michigan State Police at the Wayland Post are investigating a fatal traffic crash Sunday afternoon in Barry County’s Yankee Springs Township.
They say their preliminary investigation reveals a trike style motorcycle was traveling southbound around 1:00 p.m. on South Yankee Springs Road near Gun Lake Road. A northbound Chrysler Aspen SUV failed to yield the right-away, before making a left turn into a parking lot, and turned in front of the motorcycle resulting in the collision.
Both the driver and passenger of the motorcycle were thrown from the trike. The male driver, 59-year-old John Meyer of Caledonia, died on scene. The passenger, his 69-year-old wife, was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries where she remains in intensive care.
The driver of the Chrysler SUV, a 26-year-old Delton man, had no obvious injuries but was checked by medical personnel as a precaution.
Helmets were worn by both occupants of the motorcycle. It is unknown if the driver of the SUV was wearing a seatbelt and if alcohol/drugs were a factor in this crash.
Yankee Springs Road was closed for several hours for crash investigation and clean up.
The accident remains under investigation.
