HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — South Haven Area Emergency Services had to douse a hay fire Monday — on the back of a semi-tractor trailer. No one was hurt.
The semi caught fire while headed north on 1-196 near the Phoenix Road exit, in South Haven Township.
The trucker pulled over onto the shoulder when he saw smoke thru his rear-view mirrors, SHAES authorities said. He and another trucker unsuccessfully attacked the fire with extinguishers.
South Haven firefighters confined the fire to the front-third of the load. The cab and trailer were not damaged. Responders spent two hours unloading the burning hay.
The trucker was able to continue his trip, but with a much-smaller load.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. South Haven Police directed traffic at the scene.
