HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A community coalition comprised of groups based in Ottawa County, Grand Haven, Holland, Zeeland or other Lakeshore communities has launched a website for people who want to volunteer or donate to those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The website: www.careottawacounty.com, provides a variety opportunities for volunteering, donating goods or cash.
The Greater Ottawa County United Way, Grand Haven Area Community Foundation (GHACF), Lakeshore Nonprofit Alliance, Community Spoke, and Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area (CFHZ) responded to what officials say area residents face some uncertainties over the next few weeks and months ahead, as the pandemic evolves and completes what’s expected to be a bell-curve progression.
Individuals can help limit infection and COVID-19’s spread with frequent handwashing; social distancing (avoiding large gatherings and remaining at home unless otherwise needed); cleaning and disinfect their home (and work spaces) frequently.
Coalition officials note that vulnerable people in our community may need ongoing care and support, and as COVID-19 spreads, they may face more difficulty in getting vital services.
Nonprofit agencies in Ottawa County committed to keeping people fed, housed and healthy as best as possible expect to face increasing challenges in maintaining volunteer crews and meeting the needs.
Volunteers are often older people, who have time and desire to help others; they are being advised to remain at home. That’s why new volunteers are needed, at least temporarily.
Those who can’t volunteer but have the means are encouraged to donate what they can to area agencies or to community-wide funds managed by the Community Foundation for Holland/Zeeland, Grand Haven Area Community Foundation or Greater Ottawa County United Way. Financial gifts help local agencies offset the unexpected COVID-19-related costs, and make up for fundraisers that have been — or will be — canceled.
