WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM) – The two men who represent the Lakeshore on Capitol Hill won’t be making the long drive to Washington anytime soon.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the Capitol physician is warning of a potential spike in COVID-19 cases in the DC area, telling leadership that it was not proper or safe to return, so they had no choice but to delay the scheduled return. Last week, there was talk about changing the House rules to allow proxy voting so that not all members are needed to be present to enact legislation. While St. Joseph Representative Fred Upton thought it was a good idea, fellow Republican Bill Huizenga of Zeeland had other thoughts.
“Speaker Pelosi had originally said that she wanted it to be a bipartisan proposal,” Huizenga said during last week’s appearance on “WHTC Morning News.” “Unfortunately, they had gone down the road without it being a bipartisan proposal at all, and she was discovering that she was getting a lot of pushback, even from her own caucus, so they pulled that bill, and I think that is the right thing to do.”
House members were set to return next Monday; the Senate is still scheduled to do so on that date.
