JAMESTOWN TOWNSHIP, MI (WHTC AM/FM) – Migrant Legal Aid is accusing Ottawa County egg producer Sunrise Acres of not taking proper action to protect workers from COVID-19.
Senior attorney and director Teresa Hendricks says they’ve taken plenty of complaints from employees, who were offered an additional three-dollars an hour to keep working without masks or social distancing.
Sunrise Acres says seven of its 170 employees tested positive last week for COVID-19, but none have since. The firm says there is a financial incentive for employees to continue working, but they add they’ve told employees if they’re not comfortable, they don’t have to come in.
The Ottawa County Health Department reportedly has been in contact with Sunrise Acres about the complaints, and officials are monitoring.
Hendricks says the worries of workers facing retaliation if they don’t keep working during the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t unique to west Michigan.
