HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Thousands of people showed up for Saturday’s Black Lives Matter march. (See photo gallery.)
Shutaveya Ward, who organized the march with Lily Harman and Henry Cherry, called George’s Peaceful Unity Demonstration said the turnout far exceeded expectations.
“The message that the organizers and the people that are here are sending is that we stand united, period,” she said. “This is our community. We get to decide how we are going move forward and we have decided that moving forward together just makes the most sense. “
Ward marched in honor of her 4-year-old son. She said she’s already talking to him about ways to be safe as he grows up.
Ward said making police accountable is a top priority of the many changes needed.
“It’s going to be a muli-level, multi-dimensional change,” she said. “And it’s going to take a long time, because what has happened and what is happening has been inbred into the country for 400 years. So it’s not going to change overnight.”
